Ask The Experienced Rather Than The Learned  ein Projekt aus queer-marokkanischer Perspektive, das Wut und Schmerz legitimiert, sowie die Schnittstelle von Queerness und Erfahrungen im Gesundheitswesen aufzeigt. Es werden Arbeiten von Kenza Badi und Imad Zoukanni ausgestellt. Der Titel spiegelt ein arabisches Sprichwort wider, das dazu ermutigt, Ratschläge von Personen mit praktischer Erfahrung einzuholen, anstatt sich nur auf theoretisches und akademisches Wissen zu stützen. In einem queeren Kontext könnte dieses Sprichwort auf die Bedeutung hinweisen, sich an Personen zu wenden, die vielfältige LGBTQ+ Erfahrungen gemacht haben. Das Projekt möchte einen Raum schaffen, diesen individuellen Erlebnissen Sichtbarkeit zu geben.

Ask The Experienced Rather Than The Learned vereint zwei marokkanische Künstler*innen, die ihre Leinwände nutzen, um die unerzählten Geschichten auszudrücken, die oft unter der Oberfläche liegen.
Die Ausstellung gibt Einblick in zwei persönliche Erfahrungen von Unbehagen innerhalb queerer marokkanischer Körper. Die Vorstellung der stärksten Verbindung zwischen den Körpern queerer Künstler*innen in zwei Komplexen – der Komplexität der Karamelisierung und der Dehumanisierung. Aus einem bestimmten geografischen Kontext stammend, sickern diese Komplexe in und aus Erfahrungen des Ärgers und der imaginären Erkundung des Wesens von Queerness durch die Medien der Malerei und kreativen Kontemplation.
Imad Zoukani und Kenza Badi demontieren in ihrem Zusammenkommen das Unbehagen, das sowohl mit Rassismus als auch mit Queerphobie verbunden ist, sowohl als Individuen als auch als Künstler*innen. 

Imad Zoukanni ist ein multidisziplinärer Künstler aus Marrakesch, Marokko, spezialisiert auf Malerei und Illustration, derzeit Grafikdesign an der School of Visual Arts ESAV Marrakesch studierend. Er verwendet abstrakte Kunst als eine Form, die kein erkennbares Bild oder Objekt darstellt. Stattdessen nutzt er Farben, Formen, Linien und andere Elemente, um eine visuelle Sprache zu schaffen, die Emotionen, Empfindungen oder Ideen hervorrufen kann. In Ask The Experienced Rather Than The Learned erforscht Imad Zoukanni die Schnittstelle von Queerness und Gesundheitserfahrungen, beleuchtet dab eidie oft übersehenen Herausforderungen, mit denen queere Personen in Gesundheitseinrichtungen konfrontiert sind. Imad Zoukannis Bilder dienen als eindringlicher Kommentar zur Bedeutung von Empathie, Verständnis und inklusiven Gesundheitspraktiken.


Kenza Badi ist Malerin, Dichterin, Schriftstellerin, Forscherin und engagierte dekoloniale Transfrau. Sie beschäftigt sich mit Themen wie Liebe, Realismus und Intersektionalität aus pro-arbeiterischen Perspektiven, marokkanisch-amazighischen Vorstellungen, Arbeitergeschichte und Kunst, Transfuturismus und Realismus. Sie ist die Gründerin von Marokkueer Zawya, einer amazighischen queeren diasporischen Organisation mit Sitz in Amsterdam, Niederlande, die soziale Gerechtigkeit mittels Ahnenkult, Kunst und Kultur fördern möchte. In Ask The Experienced Rather Than The Learned kanalisiert Kenza Badi die Intensität von Wut und Schmerz und bietet Betrachtenden eine kathartische Erfahrung. Ihre Gemälde dienen als visueller Ausdruck der emotionalen Landschaften, die von queeren Individuen durchquert werden, die gesellschaftliche Normen herausfordern und Anerkennung fordern.

Kenza Badi wird am 9. Dezember im Center for World Music in Hildesheim The Rage for Every Color, im Rahmen der Ausstellung präsentieren. In der Performance wird Raum für öffentliche Trauer geschaffen, welche sich durch Bewegungen auf Stoff und den Einsatz von Farben verkörpert.

Ask the Experienced Rather Than the Learned: A project from queer moroccan perspectives, legitimizing rage and pain while showcasing the intersection of queerness and healthcare experiences featuring works by Kenza Badi and Imad Zoukanni.

In a celebration of diversity, self-discovery and the vibrant spectrum of queer experiences, KUNSTRAUM 53 announces its upcoming project Ask the Experienced Rather Than the Learned. The title is an Arabic proverb that encourages seeking advice and knowledge from those who have practical, firsthand experience rather than relying solely on theoretical or bookish knowledge. In a queer context, this proverb could suggest the importance of turning to individuals who have lived through diverse LGBTQ+ experiences for visibility and recognition. In this context the project aims to challenge and to discover narratives about queerness by highlighting the personal stories, struggles and triumphs of queer individuals.

The exhibition will feature works of two artists who use their canvases to express untold stories that often lie beneath the surface. Indeed, the project depicts two personal experiences of discomfort within queer bodies. Envisioning the strong connection between two complexes – the complex of caramelization and the other of dehumanization. Currently living in two different geographical and cultural contexts, these complexes seep into and out of experiences of grievance and the imaginative exploration of the core of queerness through the mediums of painting and creative contemplation.

Imad Zoukani and Kenza Badi, in their enthusiastic coming together, dismantle the discomfort associated with both racism and queerphobia, both as individuals and as artists. As their queerness expresses gratitude through painting, pain unfolds on their canvases. These two Moroccan queer experiences laid out on the canvas provide insight into significant stages of their lives and artistic journeys.

Imad Zoukanni is a multidisciplinary artist based in Marrakech, specializing in painting, illustration, and currently a third-year graphic design student at the School of Visual Arts ESAV Marrakech. He employs abstract art as a form that does not depict a recognizable image or object. Instead, it uses colors, shapes, lines and other elements to create a visual language that can evoke emotions, sensations or ideas. In this exhibition, Imad explores the intersection of queerness and healthcare experiences, shedding light on the often overlooked challenges faced by the community within healthcare settings. The paintings serve as a poignant commentary on the importance of empathy, understanding and inclusive healthcare practices.

Kenza Badi is a painter, poet, writer, researcher and committed decolonial transwoman. She engages with topics such as love, realism and intersectionality from pro-working-class perspectives, Moroccan-Amazigh imaginations, working-class history, and arts, trans futurism, and realism. She is the founder of Marokkueer Zawya, an Amazigh queer diasporic organization based in the Netherlands that aims to facilitate social justice through the windows of ancestralism, art and culture. She is known for her bold and emotive works. In Ask the Experienced Rather Than the Learned, she channels the intensity of rage and pain, offering a cathartic experience for viewers. Her paintings serve as a visceral expression of the emotional landscapes traversed by queer individuals, challenging societal norms, and demanding recognition.

Kenza Badi will also be performing „The Rage for Every Color“ on the 9th of December at the Center for World Music in Hildesheim. The premiere performance holds mourning and laments publicly. Kenza Badi creates a space for public grief as she embodies it through her movements on the  fabric and  the use of colors.
